A Vision of the Future, the 2011 Florida Peer Conference, will be May 7 -12 at the Hilton in Altamonte Springs, FL. This year's conference will include a youth/family conference, from May 7-8, and an adult conference, May 9-12.
Keynote speakers include Tonier Cain, a consumer advocate and team leader for the National Center for Trauma Informed Care. Cain is the subject in “Healing Neen”, a documentary released last year that is based on her life as a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect. Cain lived on the streets for two decades, where she endured violence, hunger and despair while racking up 66 criminal convictions related to her addiction.
Another keynote speaker will be Peter Ashenden, Consumer Affairs Director with the Golden Valley, Minn.-based OptumHealth. Ashenden has an extensive background in mental health consumer affairs and, as president of Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), led the largest consumer run organization in the country. He is a member of the boards of a number of national organizations.
The conference is being sponsored by the Department of Children & Families, the Florida Peer Network and Disability Rights Florida.
Planned workshops will focus on advocacy, wellness, rights, WRAP, NAMI programs, SOAR, veterans issues, peer specialists, the Baker Act and other topics.
